Scarlett Johansson served as the Global Ambassador for Oxfam for eight years. In 2007 she visited Kenya, India, and Sri Lanka. In India, she visited an Oxfam funded school where she was
involved in project to help with healthcare and domestic violence among Indian women. In Sri Lanka she visited the reconstruction projects on areas destroyed by the 2004 tsunami.
Additionally, in September 2008, Johansson visited Rwanda to increase awareness of AIDS sufferers in African nations. Along with charity works from (RED), Johansson spent days attending AIDS clinics.
